Community Orchard

The Community Orchard was planted in 2016 following an informal agreement between a group of local enthusiasts and Devon County Council.

Since then, a dedicated team of volunteers has cared for the orchard. Regular working parties help keep the area accessible and ensure the trees are well maintained.

In November 2024, Moretonhampstead Development Trust secured a long-term lease from Devon County Council and successfully obtained Rural Connectivity Funding. This funding is being used to create an accessible path through the orchard, linking it to the Wray Valley Cycle Trail.

The orchard continues to be a valuable space for the whole community. It’s used for educational visits, local events, and hands-on learning opportunities such as tree pruning. Traditional orchards like this one also provide essential habitats for a wide range of wildlife, including bees, insects, birds, bats, and small mammals.

We’re always looking for new volunteers and support for our ongoing projects. If you're interested in getting involved or would like more information, please contact Penny at penny@wellmoor.org.uk.
